ShukuruGirlsA feature story by Mambo Jambo Radio 93.0 FM Arusha’s Rotlinde Achimpota. Airing Aug. 22, 2013 on MJ FM’s Matukio ya siku program.

Shukuru means to give thanks in the Swahili language. The organization’s pilot project is run in a village near Moshi, Tanzania teaching girls how to raise and care for chickens to finance their educations. The organization’s American founder, Jo Longanilla, hopes to see these girls, and others around Africa, empowered with entrepreneurial skills that will last a lifetime.

As a media development trainer at MJ radio with Journalists for Human Rights, I’m excited to see my work with a reporter become the station’s very first Rights Media radio documentary (in Swahili).

Adam Bemma is a journalist, humanitarian, and media consultant based in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
