Liberal Leadership Convention

The results are in at the Palais des Congres in Montreal, where the Liberal Leadership Convention took place this weekend. Stephane Dion, the former environment minister, has taken the top spot as Liberal Party leader after a marathon fourth ballot. Dion defeated Michael Ignatieff, the perceived front-runner throughout the whole leadership campaign. Gerard Kennedy threw his support behind the Dion camp after the second ballot, which catapulted Dion to take a commanding lead. Bob Rae fought to the end and was dropped after the third ballot, when it showed that Dion and Ignatieff were more popular with delegates. Stephane Dion will now take the helm of the Liberal Party and lead the opposition in Ottawa, where he must fight for the environment and push for another federal election.
