Dec. 10, 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It’s a date that’s celebrated around the world as Human Rights Day, where many groups and organizations are calling for an end to rights abuses by raising awareness about where they occur. The United Nations adopted this measure after the Second World War to ensure that global citizens are entitled to their inherent right to freedom and gave the document 30 articles, which have become part of law in many countries. Since 1948, there have been many unjust wars and human rights abuses as a result, but to have one specific day each year where they’ll be reflected on and brought into the international spotlight will hopefully put an end to the injustice.
