Up against City Hall

The candidates:

Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay has been plagued by accusations of corruption. The city’s water meter scandal broke this year, which may just cause him and his Union Montreal party the job.

Newcomer Louise Harel, the leader of Vision Montreal, is looking to take the top spot in the city. Harel is no stranger to local politics, as a minister of municipal affairs she forced mergers in all metropolitan regions of Quebec.

Projet Montreal leader Richard Bergeron is hoping his transportation and environmental plan will convince voters that he can do what’s right. Of course his critics accuse him of being a one-issue candidate, a claim that he denies.

The Montreal municipal election takes place Nov. 1, 2009.
